Jens Berthel Askou is now in advanced talks with Ligue 1 side Toulouse, with Celtic set to miss out on one of their top managerial candidates.
On Wednesday, news broke that the French outfit had approached Motherwell over their manager. They presented their project and quickly reached a financial agreement with the Danish head coach, with everything now being set barring a final signature.
Transfer specialist Sacha Tavolieri took to X to break the news.
Berthel Askou joined Motherwell last summer but has blown everyone away with his team’s performances at Fir Park. He has turned things around and secured European football for them next season after a fourth-place finish that saw them register good results against the likes of Celtic, Rangers and Hearts over the course of the campaign.
Celtic were keen to bring him in to replace Martin O’Neill, with the manager said to be extremely keen on speaking to the club. It didn’t seem as though things were moving swiftly though, which is potentially a reason as to why he decided to make the move to mainland Europe instead.
New favourites to become the next Celtic manager
Robbie Keane – 10/3
Martin O’Neill – 4/1
Roberto Martinez – 4/1
Thomas Frank – 7/1
Craig Bellamy – 15/2
The Hoops will now have to look elsewhere, with Robbie Keane the favourite to step foot into the Parkhead dugout. He currently manages Ferencvaros in Hungary, and his side lost out on the league title by one point. Fans are torn over his potential appointment, with most favouring Berthel Askou or other options over him.
Time will tell what will happen, but we expect Celtic to make an appointment quickly after Saturday’s Scottish Cup final, which could see O’Neill take charge of his final game, playing against Neil Lennon’s Dunfermline.
O’Neill hasn’t been fully ruled out of the race yet, with rumours that he could potentially carry on, but as things stand, Keane leads the way.
