Celtic Women have confirmed that star player Maria McAneny has undergone surgery for an injury suffered last month.

The midfielder has been absolutely phenomenal this season, impressing in the Scottish Women’s Premier League despite the Celts struggling throughout the campaign. She has become one of the most consistent players for Grant Scott’s side, but now, it has been revealed that she won’t be available for the remaining fixtures.

Speaking about the injury, Scott said: “In terms of the squad, we are all well and good. Maria McAneny is the only one to update on.

“That will be her out now for the remainder of the season. She has had minor surgery, but she is back home and recovering.

“So, it’s a bit of bad news on that front, but everyone else should be good to go.”

McAneny has nine goals and three assists in 21 league appearances this season. With Celtic fighting to finish fourth, losing her will be a massive blow.

McAneny adds to the injury list

McAneny adds to Celtic’s injury list, which includes the likes of Clare Goldie and Amy Richardson. Both Goldie and Richardson are back in the gym, but McAneny will be focusing on recovery before getting back to work.

With the end of the season quickly approaching, a rest for all of the players will be helpful. Scott will be hoping to get a lot of work done in the transfer market in the off-season, and he’ll have a lot of players returning from injury when pre-season begins.

Fans will be going into the next campaign hoping for a better fight from a Hoops side that is expected to lose as many as 15 players in the summer. It’s going to be hard, but if any manager can turn it around, it’s Scott.
