Rangers Women captain Nicola Docherty has announced that she is signing a one-year extension with the club, continuing her six-year stay at Ibrox.

In a bait-and-switch video posted to the Gers’ social media accounts, she recalled the brilliant experiences she has had at the club. The video cuts to black before she appears again, revealing that she is putting pen to paper on the new contract.

She said:

It is difficult to put into words, when I look back on my career at Rangers, it has been filled with absolute pride and joy. I have been a part of it with some special players over the years so to get this one over the line it is something that I am really pleased with and over the moon with.

Manager Leanne Crichton is also delighted with the extension. She said:

I am delighted that Nicola has committed her future to Rangers. Nicola is a hugely influential figure within this football club and embodies everything that is expected of a Rangers captain, both on and off the pitch. Her leadership, professionalism and standards are paramount to everything we do here, and her influence across the group cannot be overstated. I firmly believe she still has a massive part to play for this team, and we are thrilled she has chosen to continue her journey with the club she loves.

She will be hoping that she can follow the announcement with a league title this weekend. If Rangers win their game against Glasgow City and Hearts lose theirs against Hibernian, the Gers will secure the trophy. It would be their first SWPL title win since 2022.

However, Hearts won’t let it go easily. They could make history by winning the first league title in their history, and with manager Eva Olid set to depart in the summer, they’ll be hoping to give her a good send-off.

Whatever happens in the league and the Women’s Scottish Cup final, Gers fans will have at least one thing to celebrate come the end of the season. Their captain has put pen to paper on a new deal, and they will be over the moon.
