Celtic Women have confirmed that goalkeeper Chloe Logan will depart the club in the summer.
Logan has been a fantastic servant to the club, coming through the Hoops academy, and stealing the title of the first player in the women’s game to graduate through and play at every age level.
She departed for Stirling University after graduating in search of more playing time; however, in 2019, she would return to Parkhead. She suffered a knee injury after joining, and she was sidelined for some time, which sadly harmed her chances of establishing herself in the hoops.
Yet, it was rumoured that she was going to be part of Elena Sadiku’s plans when she signed an extension in the summer of 2024. That never came to anything, with the manager instead favouring Kelsey Daugherty and Lisa Rodgers before her time came to an end.
In January, Logan was sent on an emergency three-month loan to fellow SWPL side Motherwell. She made four league appearances for them, conceding nine goals and keeping one clean sheet. The shot stopper rejoined Celtic in January as the Hoops looked to the end of the season, but she wasn’t called upon.
Now, although she may have been hoping for more from her recent career under Sadiku and Grant Scott, she leaves with the well-wishes of all Celtic fans after the club confirmed her departure on social media.
What is going on with contract lengths?
When Logan signed her contract, the club stated that it would keep her at Celtic until 2027. Now, she is departing a year early, which raises some questions about Saoirse Noonan.
Last week, it was reported that there was interest in the Ireland international from the WSL, WSL2, NWSL, Serie A and Belgian Super League. Soccerdonna claimed that she was out of contract in the summer, despite it originally being stated by Celtic that her deal ran until 2027.
Although it was initially assumed to be a mistake, with Logan departing a year early, could that pave the way for Noonan to move on? Fans will be hoping not, but it seems that something strange is going on at Parkhead.
The most likely scenario is that there are clauses in the contracts that Celtic offers. It’s not impossible that the club needs to do something every year to keep their deal running, and in the case where a player is attracted by higher wages or simply wants to move on, they can be released without fuss.
That raises another question on if the Hoops are doing all they can to protect the value of their assets. If a player comes through the academy and fans are told they’ve signed until a certain year, it is understandable that some people would be hurt if they departed early. Not only does it make the squad weaker, but it could rob the Hoops of a fee.
Even if this isn’t the case, it leaves everyone questioning what is really going on. There is now a confirmed example of a player leaving early, Logan, and another being claimed, Noonan. We won’t know until later down the line, but it could be worrying times for Celtic, with 15 players set to leave the club at the end of the season as well.
